lady I work with went down to see the two New Years show run ( remember when it was FOUR nights of partying? )and brought me back the SBD's she bought.I NEVER play post Jerry incarnations/lineups. Never. I dont know if it's the vocals or what but it just always seems like a cover band thing no matter how many originals were there. I'm not one of those that think that Jerry tunes shouldnt be played to me that would be ridiculous - they stand up as songs so play them and the guys in the band definitely have every right imo. I just never like any lineup, every time I try I feel it has no soul and I quickly put on the real thing.

ok well these were no exception. Played the 30th and was like yuk this sucks. The New Years show was definitely better BUT I will say this

a) I would gladly and most definitely go see them live. I can think of a lot worse ways to waste money and im sure live would be better

b) they are most definitely packing in a good effort and setlist

c) the entire Terrapin suite - flyer and all ( cant remember all the names ) was excellent. In fact better than the album because it wasnt over produced but of course needed Jerry's vocals. Then they followed it up with a well played Help/Slip. Hey if that right there on the third set ( I think ) on four discs ( played after another couple of hours of music ) aint getting your moneys worth than i dont know what is.

jots, After my D/S walkout at MSG, I will see them twice this year (max) and I don't have any expectations of the music, cause it's date night. I never listen to them otherwise. I am not putting the scene down. It's my choice. Rock away Furthur fans, (Deb being a fervent one herself) because it's definitely all house money now.

May I recommend parts of these two post JG shows.

oh dont worry Micah I have all three shows of that run and to me they are by FAR the best most inspired music they've played since after Jerry. Hell be honest since before Jerry died for a lot of years. Damn hell of a bargain to be able to download in fine sbd format. Could EASILY be an official release. And those I will listen to from time to time.I like a lot of those first 99 projects Phil put together.

Yep. The shows are great for, if nothing else, a gathering of like minded folks. For the most part the attendees are jovial, outgoing and happy to meet and make new friends. Don't get the same vibe at most other concerts these days.
As for the music, on its own it is pretty damn good, but, and I say this with trepidation, I also just can't listen to it after the fact. The only incarnation that I do seem able to listen to repeatedly is the Phil and Friends lineup with J. Greene. Played Dead tunes, but in a way that didn't come across as Karaoke. And throw in a John Scofield and you've got a completely unique sound.
Of course it is all subjective and purley personal opinion. I have nothing against folks who love the new stuff and eagerly look forward to the next download. In some ways I guess I may even be jealous that they can get even close to the same feeling from the newer music. But it is apparent that I am set in my ways and that's just the way it is. So blaze on Phil, Bobbie, Mickey and Billy and thanks for helping keep the music alive.

Wandered upon the Benevento/Russo Duo doing their damndest to rock the Zeppelin and it worked. They are not traditionally a cover band, but they are excellent musicians giving the nod to some legends. Sweet matrix mix. Check it out here:

This is an honorable attempt, but it really shows you that the Zep songs don't get very far without a crazy singer like Plant. There isn't even room for improvisation.

It would have been nice to see them lay out and jam a tune and arive at something akin to a Feeling Groovy Jam. It was a fun listen and was good as just that. The tripped out elevator music wisecrack from craven made it worth the post.

" There isn't even room for improvisation. "

Really? I dont think that's true. I've heard lots of 30 minute Dazed and Confused that are different with improv or Whole Lotta love with all the kitchen sinks they threw in. I mean the band certainly went downhill live over the years but I think there's a certain amount of improv in some of their tunes

and I gave them tremendous kudos for pulling out some great setlists playing the hard shit back tio back even instead of the monotonous rote sets the real band churned out in the later years more often than not. AND they finally for the most part have gotten rid of the stupid has to be a noodle jam intor before every song thing that was all the rage for awhile

Is it really ALL subjective? I mean could one say that 95 blows away 69-77 and REALLY be right? You could say you LIKE it better, you could say there are some good shows in 95 and be right but could you make the first statement and be right? I say no

but that wasnt my arguement to compare apples to oranges as you said. It was that I tried and havent been able to do it and obviously I aint the only one. And as for DSO - putting on A DSO to LISTEN to AT HOME instead of the real show is brain damaged imo. To see it hell yeah I would but to listen to it puts a person in the same category as chef jboayee

I like when I laugh...thanks.
Dude, I totally agree with many of your points. The intro
jam? We can do with out, yes.....yes. But we arent the
ones performing the music. We are not the sound people
trying to 'dial it in'. Hell we arent the vendors, or
big wigs.... we are there to enjoy (hopefully) the music.
We are the fans. Dont wanna be a fan? Then dont.
Wanna walk out? Then do. I would
like to slam my nuts in the silverware drawer than listen
to a Phish show. Who cares? Im not gonna deny the talent
that is there.

Like you said...putting on a Furthur show, or DSO show on
a frequent basis? Then fuck yes there is something wrong
with you. SOMETHING VERY WRONG! But hey, one day you
might be driving down the road only to discover the only
CD you have is a crappy P&F show in the glovebox. Slam
into a tree, or put it in?
What about the guy with the 'Make A Wish' whos only show
was a turdy 1987? Thats his favorite show EVER. Can you
tell him he is wrong?

I forgot to mention, as was mentioned, P&F. I love P&F.
I think they took the GDs music to a new level. Not like
other bands mentioned. But I can also say that one of the
WORST shows I ever saw was P&F at the Fillmore in 2005.
You know what? I have the show and never put it on. Am
I glad I was there? You betcha. And as most bands, they
leveled out. It changed.....good.
I think it does just get down the Mr. Tells "I was there"
theory.
So, yeah man. I do agree with most of what you are saying.
But yes, its all subjective. Dont let the baby poop fumes
disorient ya bro.
And by the way....I AM THE LADY YOU WORK WITH

Please expand on your mindlessness...
What is a 4chan post analysis? Or is it just the fact that
you didnt catch the "I AM THE LADY YOU WORK WITH" as THE
joke? If you didnt get the joke, dont worry. It happens
to me ALL the time.
Maybe, just maybe, Im a hermaphrodite. Maybe Im Lady Gaga.

Did I mention my brother Esau killed a hunter back in 1969?

hey c, for your edification on 4chan,

According to the Washington Post, "the site's users have managed to pull off some of the highest-profile collective actions in the history of the Internet."

On December 28, 2010, 4chan went down due to a DDoS attack. Christopher Poole said on his blog "We now join the ranks of MasterCard, Visa, PayPal, et al.—an exclusive club!"

I have been checking them out since their most recent attacks (credit companies above) following Julian Assange's arrest in December. The rabbit hole runs pretty deep there cause all I can see is amine in various forms ( indeed, Various Forms) and other aspects of youth culture.
And I thought our forum could be cryptic in our threads and posts.

but I HAVE tried. I'm talking putting a cd on listening at home or in the car or whatever. Not seeing the band live.Except for the 1999 Phil lineups I can pretty much guarantee theirs not one I'd put on more than once. It really seems missing it. And there are a few good Other one things I like but that had Kimock and Hornsby so hard to go too wrong on that.

I agree, I never listen to anything Dead oriented post-Jerry since there's still so many surprises out there I haven't heard enough of WITH Jerry. I'm always looking for something new and different, especially in the eras I haven't thoroughly mined...it's the main reason I hang out here so much.

Live is another story, I've had fun at most of the Furthur shows I've seen thus far.

JOS-- I listened to the recordings on the web and I agree that they are subpar and understand your feeling

BUT-- what I can say is the two runs of shows here in Colorado last year were NOT EVEN CLOSE to being that bad. Asa matter of fact the 3-6 show and the 9-25 show were down right HOT!!! And I would have been pissed if I missed either of them.

That said, I have declined to buy tickets for the February run at the indoor 1st Bank Center, though I may try to find a ticket for Saturday since I may finally found a job after 2 years of looking( I took my pee test this afternoon and I pray I pass-lol).

The strong semi confirmed dates in July August time frame for Red Rocks and Telluride I will try to see one RR show and will travel for the Telluride weekend, the music isn't the Grateful Dead but it is still a fine time to be had hangin with the "Heads" and listening to some one play my favorite music, especially feeling Phil lay down the thunder.

Do as you will, of coarse its your choice, but if they are close, its worth one nite of not sittin in front of the puter screen or TV.

ALL IMHO(as I just was listening to Jerry sing MIGHT AS WELL ya MIGHT AS WELl mighty swell)

dont get me wrong I'd definitely go. Of course school night MIGHT play a factor for me if I lived where everybody came through but I most certainly would probably go. And Telluride will definitely be a fun time. I imagine the scene will be a lot cooler like it was at the Comes a Time thing I saw at the Greek. Very few Phishy lot rat types but not a bunch of grannys and grumpys not partying either

Hi John - I agree. I am always intrigued by the set lists, but listening to the recordings leaves me flat. However I always think I would enjoy the music live.

I saw DSO sometime back and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. But I don't listen to any DSO shows here @ LMA.

Just have to be there I guess.

Wayne Hancock is playing at a bar here next week. That will be my chance to be there.

I like to go to the Futher, Ratdog, Phil & Friends, 7 Walkers shows, but don't listen to them on the Archive. I come her to get what I can't have, the past. I have my memories of Jerry and the boys. The new stuff doesn't do it for me, with the exception of 7 Walkers, they have been putting out some fine stuff. I'll agree with Micah on the 4/15, 16, 17/99 Phil & Phriends shows, I have listened to those many times. I will seak out a Magnolia Mountain on the new released shows with John K. But the one show I repeatedly listen to that does it for me is this one, the only one I have on my iPod post Jerry. Phil had a great line up, the sound is incredible, and the energy jumps out at the gate.

WOW that was smoking I usually don't like when they speed up Eyes but it worked for me, The guy on keys nailed it(Eyes & the whole show). I caught the Milestones at the Worcester Dead show last year and it was the highlight for me. Thanks for the post. As for the original thread I have trouble listening to the Furthur shows but like going to the shows feel they are doing a better job then the Dead. I do occasionally listen to the furthur shows that I've been to but I think its the I was there factor. I am really digging the 7 Walkers the flavor they are putting out is nice and soulful and laidback but missed them so far live. Wanted to go to the northampton show but opted for Phish instead, next time.

I went two nights in Worcester first night was real mellow, low energy even the band was looking at each other like what should we play next to get out of the way for the rest of the NYE run. The second night was a total dif't story great flow and had a lot of highlights for me. If you didn't see any of the NYE highlights you should check out what they did at MSG it was like a full on broadway show it gets a little repetitive on film but I would have felt like I got my $$$$ worth.

Will have to check out the Worchester shows, specifically that second night. Thanks for the link.

I have a couple Trey shows I downloaded recently. Can't remember where I got them, but they were officially shared free shows. One was titled Trey's Christmas Gift 2009, which is a compilation I think. I also snagged Trey Live at Princeton from Nov 18, 2010. I can upload them, just let me know if you want 'em.

Listen the FURTHUR AUDS if you like kareoke recordings with most of the vocals buried under the noise floor. We have better equipment; but most of these are worse than 40 year old Grateful Dead AUD recordings...
